Former First Grader Lucy Mckay and her dad Dr. Matthew Mckay visited the Helpful Hedgehogs last week. Dr. McKay is an Associate Professor in the Department: School of Earth, Environment and Sustainability at Missouri State University. Lucy and her dad brought Virtual Reality headsets, rocks, and a mineral collection. Dr. McKay shared a video of a volcano in Iceland that erupted when a group of Missouri State Scientist were present. Students learned that mineral form when water continually moves around and then crystalizes. The minerals then grow into shapes. Minerals can be identified by their color and shape. The chemistry of fossils is what scientist use to determine he age. Students got to see the various rocks, minerals and fossils. Then students each used the virtual reality headsets to explore volcanos in Iceland and Mount Saint Helens in Washington State that Dr. McKay has visited and explored. Dr. McKay has visited 6 volcanoes, his favorite one so far is Mount Saint Helens. We learned so much form Lucy and her dad. Thank you for sharing!

Reading Buddies from Mrs. Flander’s 2nd grade and Mrs. Martin’s 5th grade had some special visitors today. Mrs. Suzanna Lynne is an author who brought her “Stars” of the show to our school, Buddy and Winnie. Mrs. Lynne writes and illustrates her own books. She read one of her own books to us, spoke about bullying, and shared some tricks. This visit made our day “paw-some.”

Mr. Madsen's high school physics students have spent the past few weeks creating a Rube Goldberg Machine to demonstrate energy transfer, simple machines, and conservation of energy. Students had certain design requirements that they had to adhere to such as a run time greater than 10 seconds, completing a final task, a certain number of steps in a limited amount of space, and a creative theme. First Grade Students were invited to watch the Rube Goldberg Machines in action. Physics students shared how the machines were designed, how they worked, demonstrated the process, and answered questions. First Grade students had a "ball" watching the machines and visiting the physics classroom. Thank you, Mr. Madsen and Physics Students, first graders were talking about how fun it would be to build their own Rube Goldberg Machines!!

How do you celebrate a year of great behavior in the library? With a PJ/Beach party day, of course! Sand bucket snacks and frozen lemonades with umbrellas made for a fun time. All grades had similar parties depending upon how they voted.
