We appreciate and recognized her 16 years of service, dedication, and passion for Greenwood. She has guided many endeavors and left a tremendous impact on our Bluejays! She has a heart for students and that was always evident. Thank you to Dr. Duncan!

First Grade Students learned about Chinese New Year from Kelsey Lou's mom, Yang, Alice Liu’s mom, Jing, and Joziyyah Fong’s dad, Perry. Students learned about the Chinese Zodiac by figuring out their signs using the year they were born and learned to say Happy New Year, xin nian kuai le! The students received the gift of the red pocket envelopes, lai see, for joy in 2023 and tried traditional dumplings and roasted sunflower seeds.

Celebrating Greenwood’s Accomplishments at the Springfield Winter Classic
Greenwood Debate participated in one of the largest invitational tournaments of the year jointly hosted by Springfield Central and Glendale this past weekend. Over 35 schools participated from across Missouri – including several large schools from the Kansas City area – participated in the Springfield Winter Classic.
Jamie Alford continued to show that she is one of the state’s best performers in International Extemp – earning 4th place out of over 65 competitors in the event. Jamie also placed 3rd in Informative Speaking. She and her partner, Eleanor Hilotin, also won debates against Lee’s Summit West, Liberty, and North Kansas City before losing a close 2-1 decision against Willard in the quarterfinals. Jamie and Eleanor end their regular season with an impressive preliminary win-loss record of 18-2 on the year. Also advancing to semi-finals in large individual event fields were Mary Gabriel in US Extemp and Fatima Aslam in International Extemp.
The first-year competitors participated at Glendale High School and also proved very successful. Marcus Ryan and Ethan Duff dominated novice US Extemp with 1st and 2nd place, respectively. Marcus and Ethan also advanced to the semi-finals of novice Policy Debate. Also, Carys Argueta and Gabriel Parada placed fourth in novice Policy Debate. Amore Penella and Anna Le both advanced to semi-finals of individual events – Amore in Informative Speaking and Anna in International Extemp. The future of Greenwood Debate is looking brighter than ever!
Next up – several varsity students will compete in our last regular season competition which will be held at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, MO this weekend.
Go Jays!

After reading "The Disappearing Snowman", first grade students conducted an experiment to learn about solids, liquids, gases, and evaporation. The objective was to observe that gas is a matter that can fill a balloon. Bubbles formed in the bottle from the mixture of warm water, sugar, and yeast, causing the balloon to inflate. Awesome job scientists!

New Year, New Greenwood Debate Success!
Some very dedicated Greenwood Debaters spent part of the semester break competing at the first tournament of 2023 hosted by Lebanon High School.
Huge congratulations to each student who completed the competition – because all of those students came home from Lebanon with at least one trophy and two of those students earned tournament championships!
Jamie Alford was the tournament champion in International Extemp and a semi-finalist in Informative Speaking. Jamie also paired with Fatima Aslam and defeated teams from Springfield Catholic, Bolivar, and Glendale on their way to third place in Varsity Policy Debate. Fatima was also sixth in International Extemp and a semi-finalist in Original Oratory. Also, Romi Kim placed 5th in United States Extemp.
Our first year (novice) competitors also excelled against quality competition. Ethan Duff and Marcus Ryan finished 3rd in Novice Policy Debate. Ethan was also the tournament champion in United States Extemp! Tristan Khoshyomn just missed another championship with the 2nd place award in International Extemp. Gyan Grewal finished 5th in Informative Speaking.
During the spring semester the Blue Jay debaters will be working toward a strong finish to the invitational season and hope for several national qualifiers this year! Go Jays!
