Mr. Loren Broaddus surprised first graders as a Mystery Reader for Literacy Week on Tuesday March 4, 2025. Mr. Broaddus is the 9th Grade History and Public Affairs Instructor at Greenwood Laboratory School. The students loved hearing Pigsty by Mark Teague. Wendell the main character has a very messy room, a pigsty! Pigs start showing up in Wendell’s rom and he loves it at first, however, soon the pigs start messing up his prized possessions. They put hoof prints on his comic books and chew the corners of his baseball cards. He soon gets “all hoofs on deck” and cleans the room. Thank you, Mr. Broaddus!

In an engaging and hands-on science lesson, 3rd graders dissected various fruits to uncover their relationships. We dissected cherries, grapes with seeds, and nectarines. We determined that cherries and nectarines are related due to the similarities between the seeds and leaves.

Dr. Steven Raphael, Scarlett’s dad, visited the first grade class to talk about teeth and celebrate February being Healthy Teeth Month. Students learned about the layers of the tooth, the enamel, the dentin and the pulp chamber. Dr. Raphael had students try to say “ I am sad” by covering your teeth with your lips as an example of what you would sound like if you did not have any teeth. Try It! Why do you need to take care of your teeth? If the bacteria or “sugar bugs” sit on your teeth you can get cavities and have problems with your gums. Students asked lots of great questions and were each provided with a dental hygiene treat bag to take home. Thank you, Scarlett and Dr. Raphael.

Dr. Krisi A. Causa, Margaret’s mom, visited the first grade classroom to celebrate Margaret being the student of the week. Dr. Causa brought surgical masks and head coverings for the students and explained why these are needed. Students learned that surgeons remove tissue from the body that has been damaged beyond repair or might have a disease. Students enjoyed two of Margaret’s favorite snacks White Cheddar Pirates Booty and Hello Panda cookies treats.  Thank you Margaret and Dr. Causa.

First Grade students have been studying about animals in science during this unit. The class received our larvae and butterfly kit a few weeks ago from our Inspire Science Kit. Students have watched the complete metamorphosis process as the larva changed into chrysalis, then to five beautiful Painted Lady Butterflies. This butterfly is native to North America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. The Painted Lady is known as a “brush-footed butterfly” because the forelegs are small and covered with hair.

Lucy Allhands was the student of the week for first grade! Lucy’s parents, Michael and Hannah, braved the snow and ice to come talk to the first grade class about their careers and Lucy. Students were talked to about following the rules, making good life choices, and doing their best. Lucy shared several things with the class that she felt would help students be good citizens now and in the future. Students asked great questions and had a wonderful sweet treat to start the day. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Allhands!

Do minnows have bones? First Graders discovered that minnows have a Weberian apparatus, which is a series of small bones that connect their swim bladder to the inner ear. This allows the minnow to hear vibrations in the water. So, they do have bones!

HOSA State Qualifiers
Greenwood FBLA students competed in the District 18 FBLA Competition last week. We are incredibly proud of our students' success. FBLA is new to Greenwood this year, so not only are we celebrating our students' state qualifications, we are also recognizing the hard work and risk-taking of all of our students who competed and tried something new-to-them. A special thank you to Kai Schaeffer and Tristan Khoshyomn for their leadership as co-presidents of our FBLA chapter. If you see these students around, give them a shout-out and encourage them as they prepare for state competition!

First Grade Students enjoyed listening to author David Shannon read his book No, David! (A First Grade Favorite) on Wednesday February 5, 2025 for World Read Aloud Day. No, David! was a 1998 Caldecott Honor book. The author told us why he writes his books, how he generates ideas, and even why David the main character has a different eyebrow. Do you know why? It is his naughty eyebrow :) Students enjoyed asking the author questions and playing the interactive games while David was reading. At the conclusion Mr. Shannon taught the students how to draw David, the main character of the book. We also got a sneak preview of the newest book coming out soon. First Grade Students had their own comfy, reading day using flashlights and reading books to special stuffed animals. Thank you Scholastic Storyvoice.
