Greenwood Girls on the Run raised $328.60 at their Lemonade/Iced Tea Stand today for their Community Impact Project! The girls brainstormed, compromised, and agreed that they wanted to help animals and chose to donate the proceeds to the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri. We’re so proud of these young ladies and a big thank you to everyone who supported the girls efforts today.

The First Grade Helpful Hedgehogs created magical crystal hedgehogs. The formation of the crystal spines takes 3-4 days. The hedgehogs glow in the dark after exposure to the sunlight or a flashlight. Students selected their color of hedgehog based upon their own hypothesis of which hedgehog would grow more crystals. We were surprised to see that some of the hedgehogs did not form the crystals, while others did. Students decided after observation that the red hedgehogs grew more crystals than the other two colors, green and blue.

First Grader Emelia Speer’s parents, Jason and Tiffany, celebrated Emelia’s student of the week by sharing about their Christmas Tree Farm. The Evergreen Fields Christmas Tree Farm is located in Republic, Missouri. There are 8 growing zones in the United States and Republic is located in Zone 6 B. There are Canaan Fir Trees and Scotch Pine Trees growing on the farm. Each tree requires a half gallon of water every three days. The trees that are growing now need to grow for two more years to be harvested and sold for Christmas Trees. When the trees are 4-5 years old they begin to pull water from beneath the surface of the ground and do not require watering. Students completed a plants paper that had them categorize what plants are, what they need, and what they have as an extension of the lesson. Emelia provided a doughnut snack for a special treat! Each student and Dr. Hammerschmidt were presented with a Canaan Fir Tree to take home.

First Grade students continued the Greenwood Tradition Friday April 19, 2024 with the Inspiring Americans presentation. Students researched an individual who has made a significant contribution that inspires others often in the face of adversity. Original Visual Language poetry was performed outlining how their person overcame adversity to become an inspiration. Students learned to conduct beginning research skills and how to disseminate important information while creating paper bag books. This year students portrayed authors, artist, sports figures, dancers, musicians, scientists, and inventors. Outstanding job First Graders!
