Second graders began their study of the holidays around the world with a presentation about Diwali. Dr. Ichha Sethi and Yunay did a presentation and brought Samosas, a traditional food from India, for the students to taste.

2nd graders had fun making gingerbread houses! Thanks to everyone who helped make this such a special moment.

Congratulations to Coach Percival and the Lady Jay's basketball team on capturing third place at the Fordland basketball tournament over Hartville! They are 5-1!

Eli Zhang’s parents, Dr. Peng and Xinge Zhang, visited the first grade classroom to celebrate his being this week’s Student of the Week. Dr. Peng Zhang is the Director of Strategy and Innovation and Adjunct Faculty at College of Business, Cindy Zhang is the Assistant Director of International Admission. Students learned to pronounce Eli’s name in Chinese and heard about his family. Eli loves basketball, BJJ, water fun, and Pokemon. Students learned about Eli’s first trip to China to Sanya Island and Beijing where he ate his favorite Chinese foods, Beijing Traditional Hotpot and Beijing Duck. An interesting fact about Eli is that he is starting his own 3-D Printing Business and made each student a Christmas ornament with their name on it. Each student received a gift bag that contained a postcard from places Eli has been, stickers, cookies, and 3-D creation. Students received a Class of MSU 2040 Certificate signed by Matt Magruder, the Director of Admissions Missouri State University. These will be in their portfolios for safekeeping.

The Greenwood Middle School Scholar Bowl team competed against Crane and won. All players contributed by answering at least one question correctly. They are currently 2 and 0!

First Grade Students were delighted to have our first Holiday Mystery Reader.
Students are given clues and try to guess who is wearing the hooded cape.
Thursday, November 21st's Holiday Mystery Reader was Mrs. Amanda Montileone, Berkeley’s mom.
Mrs. Montileone read Thank You, Sarah: The Women Who Saved Thanksgiving by Laurie Anderson.
Sarah Hale was persistent, brave, and smart. She used her Superpower and gift of writing (appropriate for first grade Superhero Day) to lobby five presidents for over four decades to save the holiday!

Happy late Thanksgiving from First Grade!

Balanced and Unbalanced Forces: To conclude our study of balanced and unbalanced forces, third grade headed to the event center and participated in an old-fashioned tug of war! This activity allowed students to experience the concepts they had learned in a fun and dynamic way!

Do we know the difference between fiction and nonfiction...I think we do! Students had fun doing a hands-on activity to practice identifying fiction from nonfiction in library.

Studying the Dewey Decimal System is way more fun when you play bingo with Skittles and M&M's!

4th and 5th graders had a blast with the new Breakout Edu Boxes (thank you, GPA!) They escaped from Mr. Lemoncello's library by solving clues allowing them open locks to "break out." Teamwork, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Nathan Wu achieved 2nd places for both 200IM and 100Breast on the MSHSAA Boys State Championships November 15-16, with new personal best and new school records. Proud of our Bluejay!

On November 19th, 31 ELE 410 students had the opportunity to teach eight groups of first and third graders in Dr. Hammerschmidt’s and Mrs. Gray’s classrooms at Greenwood.
Early in the semester, during Week 3, the ELE 410 students met their Greenwood students and gathered valuable information to help them design a 5E lesson. These lessons targeted Missouri Learning Standards: first graders explored the contributions of individuals typically studied in K-5 programs associated with national holidays, while third graders examined the historical significance of notable Missourians who have shaped our state and nation.
Throughout the semester, ELE 410 students deepened their understanding of the 5E instructional model by participating in hands-on 5E lessons. Working collaboratively, they established group norms, developed their own 5E lessons, and rehearsed by teaching the lessons to their peers. The process included video-recording these rehearsals, receiving constructive peer feedback, and revising their lessons for Greenwood.
The culminating teaching experience at Greenwood allowed ELE 410 students to apply their learning in a meaningful and authentic setting. Many reflected on how this experience significantly boosted their teaching confidence.

Rachel and Jordan Heinz vested the first-grade classroom to celebrate Hadley being the student of the week November 18-22, 2024. Hadley enjoys gymnastics, reading, tacos, swimming, and plays the piano. She loves ice cream with sprinkles! Hadley recently celebrated her birthday on November 8th and wanted to treat her classmates to an Andy’s ice cream party with lots of sprinkles during her celebration.
