4th graders used lemons as batteries to create circuits and learn about electricity!
Pick of the Pies!
The third graders enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving pie tasting where they sampled four different kinds of pies-apple, cherry, chocolate, and pumpkin. All the pies were generously donated by parents. After tasting each one, the students picked their favorite and wrote an opinion paragraph about it, sharing their thoughts on what made that pie special.
Congratulations to our very own Maren Altrup! Maren is a fifth grader in Mrs. Martin’s class who was honored by getting her opinion about AI published in the Time For Kids magazine. That magazine is shared around the United States and other countries as well. Great job Maren! We are very proud of you!
First Grade Helpful Hedgehog Student of the Week for November 11-15, 2024, is George Musgrave! George invited his dad, Mr. Brian Musgrave, to speak to the class. Students were read one of George’s favorite books, The Raft by Jim LaMarche. The story encourages the reader to enjoy summer vacation, celebrate adventures, use your imaginations and explore the world around us. George’s dad shared that George was named after the Founding Fathers, George Washington and Alexander Hamilton. George likes to travel with his family and has taken up a new hobby, Motocross. Students watched a video of George dancing, traveling, and riding his Motocross Bike. Students enjoyed a cupcake to celebrate George being the student of the week and his BIRTHDAY!

Isaiah Remulla was a guest at the Downtown Rotary Club and was recognized as an exemplary student. Congratulations, Isaiah!
National STEM Day is all about celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—the essential skills that shape how we understand and interact with the world. 2nd graders were challenged with making the longest chain using one piece of paper. The winning team of Harper & Pierce made a chain that was 167 inches long.
Greenwood Debate participated, along with 21 other schools, in the Marshfield Invitational last weekend. Mary Gabriel was the tournament champion in Informative Speaking!! Two other Greenwood students also advanced to the final round of Informative. Gyan Grewal finished in 2nd place and Laila Ozturk in 6th. Mary was also 3rd in United States Extemporaneous Speaking and Gyan 3rd place in International Extemporaneous Speaking.
In Varsity Policy Debate, Greenwood had 2 teams advance to the top 8 elimination rounds! Tristan Khoshyomn and Taaha Khan teamed up to earn victories over Springfield Central, Catholic, and Rolla to emerge undefeated from preliminary competition and finish 3rd place overall. Laila and Minal Khan also participated in the quarterfinals and earned 4th place.
Other highlights from the tournament included Tristan placing 5th in Original Oratory, Minal advancing to semifinals in United States Extemp, Ethan Duff advancing to semi-finals in Original Oratory, and Ilyaan Khan advancing to semi-finals in Informative Speaking.
Next up –a short break before December competitions in Lebanon and Bolivar.

2nd graders made predictions about the weight, circumference, number of seeds, and height of their pumpkins. Then we rolled up our sleeves and dug in to pull out the inner contents and group then into piles of 10.
Congratulations to our Scholar Bowl team for winning 1st place in the Small School Division and 2nd place Overall at the Parkview Math and Science Scholar Bowl Tournament on Friday! We are so proud of Spencer, Nathan, Joaquin, Kai S. and Oliver. Thank you to the teachers that have done an amazing job educating them. Go Bluejays!
First Grade students were invited to the Cybersecurity Lab in Glass Hall on Friday. Dr. Guo and Yingying Li, Victoria and Olyvia’s parents, organized the field trip. Professors and Graduate Assistants assisting were Dr. Zhiguo Yang (Daniel 2nd graders dad), Dr. Peng Zhang (Eli’s dad), Dr. Andrew Albritton (Hudson’s uncle), and Amber Granberg (ITC department GA). Students got to see the room where students learned about trading stocks, the board room (they loved the cushy chairs), the balcony where they had a discussion about communication, and the cybersecurity computer lab. In the lab students were able to see inside of a computer and were introduced to the various components that are required for a computer to function properly. Thank you to Yingying Li and Dr. Albritton for walking with us over to Glass Hall and back.
First grade students wrote a book report after reading a favorite book. In class students have worked on characters, setting, plot, point of view, and writing a synopsis. Pumpkin Characters were created to represent the character that the student liked best from the book. Students presented the book report and characters to their classmates. The first grade fall tradition encourages academic and creativity!

Elementary students had fun learning about fire safety with the Springfield Fire Department! They got to tour a firetruck, learn best practices for preventing fire, what to do if there is a fire, and all about the firemen's protective suit. Students even got to hold a firehose and sit in the truck!
The First Grade Helpful Hedgehogs have been learning about elections. After reading several books, our Scholastic News article “Hip, Hip, Hooray! It’s Election Day!”, and watching videos students voted on their favorite candidate, Mr. Pretzel or Miss Goldfish. Students learned about running for office, identifying a candidate they could agree with or liked, polls, secret ballot, casting a vote, ballot box, voting booth, tallying votes, and election results. The outcome of the election and the winner for the Favorite First Grade Snack November 5, 2024, is……… Miss Goldfish!
The final tally was Miss Goldfish received 17 voted and Mr. Pretzel received 9 votes.
Dr. Teresa Mabary, Berkeley’s grandmother, was our guest speaker for her Student of the Week presentation. After spending 30 years in public education as a teacher, principal, and superintendent, Dr. Mabary decided her retirement would consist of opening a ceramic shop. Her passion for creativity, along with her motivation to create socialization in her hometown motivated Dr. Mabary to circle back to something she enjoyed early in her life. Students learned how ceramics are poured, cleaned, and painted. They even got to paint their own ceramics! Student were treated to Goldfish and cupcakes. Each student took home a creation they painted in class. Thank you, Berkeley and Dr. Mabary!
50 days smarter! Kindergarten celebrated 50 days of learning by writing 50 sight words, counting to 50 in different ways, reading books published in the 1950s, the hand jive, and root beer floats!
Greenwood Debate Excels at Republic Tournament!
Last weekend Greenwood Debate competed at the Republic High School Invitational Tournament with 26 schools from across Missouri. The team returned with 4 tournament championships! Ilyaan Khan won TWO first place awards – Novice International Extemporaneous Speaking and Novice Informative Speaking! Tristan Khoshyomn was the tournament champion in Varsity International Extemp – for the third tournament in row! Tristan and Mary Gabriel were also tournament champions in Varsity Policy Debate!
We are especially proud that the Greenwood team set a goal and then worked together to win the Ethan Hansen Traveling Extemporaneous Trophy. The trophy is awarded at the Republic tournament each year to the school attending the tournament that earns the most points in Extemporaneous Speaking. Greenwood’s name will be forever engraved on this traveling trophy as a permanent reflection of this amazing performance.
Other Greenwood finalists included: Laila Ozturk (2nd Place Varsity Informative Speaking and 4th Place International Extemp), Ethan Duff (4th – Varsity International United States Extemp and 4th Varsity Policy Debate), Taaha Khan (3rd Place Novice International Extemp and 4th Place Novice Informative Speaking), Mary Gabriel (2nd Place Informative Speaking), Connor Manzardo (2nd Place Novice United States Extemp), Gyan Grewal(4th Varsity Policy Debate),and Tristan Khoshyomn (4th Place Original Oratory).
Top 12 semi-finalist awards went to: Ethan Duff and Mohan Grewal (Varsity Original Oratory), Karamjot Singh (Novice International Extemp), Gyan Grewal (Varsity International Extemp and Varsity Informative Speaking, Mary Gabriel (Varsity Informative Speaking), Connor Manzardo (Novice Informative Speaking).

Congratulation to one of Greenwood’s 3rd grade students Arjun Amritphale for being a recent qualifier at Math League! Arjun will be going to districts in a few months and then (hopefully) state level which is held at St. Louis.
The test consisted of four rounds (number sense, sprint, target, and team.) The test was a timed three-hour long test online. He tested with students up to fifth grade. Parents can find more information about Math League on the link below.
